The journey of County First Ladies Association since its establishment in 2014
The County First Ladies Association (CFLA) was established in 2014 within Kenya's devolved governance framework following the 2010 Constitution as a platform uniting the wives of Kenya's County Governors.
The association was created to advocate for quality health care, education, and socioeconomic development, with a special focus on women, children, and other vulnerable groups across all 47 counties.
CFLA operates as a non-political and non-religious organization, aimed at harnessing the collective influence and solidarity of the County First Ladies to champion advocacy, community empowerment, and sustainable development at both the county and national levels.
Key milestones in CFLA's history of advocacy and community empowerment
The County First Ladies Association was founded as a platform for the spouses of Kenya's 47 County Governors to unite their efforts in advocacy and community development.
CFLA launched its first initiatives focusing on maternal and child health, education access, and women's empowerment across counties. The association began establishing partnerships with government agencies and NGOs.
CFLA launched its first comprehensive strategic plan, formalizing its approach to advocacy and program implementation. Key focus areas included RMNCAH+N (Reproductive, Maternal, Newborn, Child, Adolescent Health and Nutrition), ECD support, and EMPOWER Clinics.
CFLA established EMPOWER Clinics in 18 counties, providing critical cancer screening services, particularly for vulnerable populations, improving early detection and treatment access.
Through structured mentorship programs, CFLA organized holiday camps for girls in select counties, fostering leadership, life skills, and educational support.
CFLA established kitchen gardens to enhance school nutrition, launched a school milk program in three counties, and rolled out a menstrual hygiene program in 11 counties, ensuring access to sanitary products and menstrual health education.
CFLA conducted a comprehensive evaluation of its 2020-2023 Strategic Plan, identifying key successes, challenges, and lessons learned to inform future planning.
Launch of the current strategic plan focusing on six key result areas: Health, Economic Empowerment, Education and Mentorship, Ending GBV, Environmental Sustainability, and Institutional Strengthening.
